How it works

GST is charged on top of your base amount. Within the same state it splits into CGST and SGST (half each); to a client in another state it is a single IGST at the full rate. The total tax is identical either way — only the heads differ, and they follow the client's state, not yours.

Most professional services are taxed at 18%. You only charge GST once you are GST-registered, which is mandatory above ₹20 lakh of annual turnover (₹10 lakh in some states).

Frequently asked

What is the GST rate for freelancers in India?
Most freelance and professional services fall under 18% GST. Some categories differ, so confirm your SAC code, but 18% is the common rate for design, development, writing and consulting.
When do I split GST into CGST and SGST vs IGST?
If your client is in the same state as you, charge CGST + SGST (9% + 9% for an 18% rate). If they are in a different state, charge a single IGST at the full rate. It is decided by the client’s place of supply.
Do I have to charge GST as a freelancer?
Only if you are GST-registered, which is required once your turnover crosses ₹20 lakh a year (₹10 lakh in some states). Below that you must not charge GST.
