Calculate the TDS your client withholds under Section 194J, 194C, 194H or 194I. Free TDS calculator for Indian freelancers and professionals.
TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) is withheld by your client and paid to the government against your PAN. For most freelance professional work it is Section 194J at 10%. It is computed on the amount before GST. You are not losing it — it is a prepayment of your income tax that you reconcile in Form 26AS and claim when you file.
| Section | Applies to | TDS rate | Threshold (per year) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 194J | Professional / technical fees | 10% | ₹30,000 |
| 194C | Contractor / sub-contractor work | 1% (individual) / 2% (company) | ₹30,000 single / ₹1,00,000 aggregate |
| 194H | Commission or brokerage | 2% | ₹15,000 |
| 194I | Rent | 2% (plant) / 10% (land/building) | ₹2,40,000 |
Rates and thresholds change between financial years — confirm the section and rate that apply to you against the primary source, the Income Tax Department (incometax.gov.in).
